Winshaw Family Vineyards Bill Winshaw 2017

Pleasure in abundance. Super smooth, silky blend of cab franc (67%) with a seasoning of malbec, cab, merlot. The wine matured for 24 months in 225 and 300L barrels, around a 1/3 new. There’s an assured modernity to an otherwise traditional wine. On the nose is cab franc’s dark, leafy fragrance, hint of tobacco and new leather, before crushed blackberries, plums and winter spice. The 14.5% alcohol is keenly balanced and gives the palate a certain vinosity and freshness. Velvety tannins are offset by a superb, dry finish. Also in the range is a delicious malbec and another Bordeaux-style blend, the Charles Winshaw. The three wines are the maiden releases for Winshaw Family Vineyards by brothers JP and Pierre Winshaw. The wines are inspired by their great-grandfather Dr. William Charles Winshaw, who is credited with starting Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery (now of course, Distell) as well as by their grandfather Bill Winshaw who continued in his stead. It’s no wonder with such pedigree that their debut release is so very accomplished. One to watch. R295 (93) ML
