This is only the second time Eikendal has released the Infused by Earth range, paired with a premium-priced cabernet franc, the duo is said to be a ‘terroir-focused collection produced only in years of exceptional quality.’ The chardonnay is the stand out for me. It manages to be both a modern interpretation of the grape, while still feeling nostalgically Stellenbosch with its rich flavour profile. From unirrigated bush vines on the lower slopes of the Helderberg it was matured in a combination of new oak and granite pots for 16 months. The wine has a certain light-footed grace about it but with heaps of complexity – flint, blossom, baked citrus and almond notes before a layered palate, the flavours come in waves, rich citrus immediately cleansed by bright acidity built on smoky oak.
